Corinth was an important city in southern Greece. When Paul first arrived in Corinth from Athens, he knew no one in the city. But he soon met a Jew named Aquila and his wife, Priscilla. Like Paul, Aquila was a tentmaker. Paul made a living by making tents wherever he went. In Paul’s day, even highly educated Jews made a living by manual labour. For example, Jewish scribes (teachers) did not charge a fee for their teachings but rather practised a trade to earn a living.
