When Peter and the other apostles began to accept the new Gentile believers as brothers and sisters in Christ, the Jews living in Jerusalem and Judea rose up against them. Herod, who wanted to maintain peace and stability, sought a way to appease the Jews. He realised that the best way to please the Jews was to arrest and execute the apostles, so he decided to carry out his plan. So he killed James the brother of John with the sword. When Herod saw that it pleased the Jews, he added to this by arresting Peter also, and putting him in prison.
