The high priest asked Stephen, “Are these things so? Have you said these things against our temple and the law of the Jews?” In response, Stephen did not defend himself, but defended the gospel of Christ. That is, he defended this new religion that the Jews opposed. In his defence, Stephen sought to show that God’s will was never to live among men only among one nation and in one temple. The true people of God, those who truly believe in Jesus Christ, can be from any race and from any country. In this chapter, Stephen presents a history of the Jewish people, which begins with Abraham, the father of the people of Israel, and continues to Christ. By citing the Jewish Holy Scriptures (the Old Testament), he shows that this new religion is now the true religion of God.
