The Jewish priests and Sadducees were upset by the uproar that had arisen among the people over the healing of the lame man. Worse still, the Jewish leaders had just handed Jesus over to be put to death as a criminal, and now his disciples were telling everyone that Jesus had risen from the dead. The Jewish leaders were in a difficult position. The apostles had performed a great miracle, and thousands had followed them. All the people praised God and praised the apostles for this miracle. Moreover, Peter and John had not committed any crime. If the Jewish leaders punished them in any way, the people would rise up against their leaders. So the leaders were afraid to take action against them.
