After visiting the disciples in Galatia and Phrygia, Paul came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples who had believed in Christ but had not yet received the Holy Spirit. He asked them, “Unto what then were you baptised?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.” Paul’s understanding was that baptism and the receiving of the Holy Spirit always come together, or at least within a short time interval of each other. Sometimes baptism comes first, and sometimes the Holy Spirit comes first. But in either order, baptism and the receiving of the Holy Spirit are essential to being a true Christian. So when Paul realised that these disciples had not received the Holy Spirit, he asked them, “Unto what then were you baptised?” They replied, “Into John’s baptism.”
