The first miracle of Jesus was turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana of Galilee, as recorded in John 2:1-11. At his mother Mary's request, Jesus transformed approximately 120 gallons of water, stored in six stone jars for purification, into high-quality wine. This act, called a "sign," displayed his divinity, revealed his glory, and caused his disciples to believe in him.
In 1st-century Jewish culture, running out of wine at a wedding was considered a major social catastrophe and a severe breach of hospitality, carrying a deep sense of shame and social disgrace. Weddings were week-long community celebrations, and running out of supplies was not merely an oversight but a failure of responsibility, likely leading to potential lawsuits from the bride's family against the groom.
Jesus Christ's purpose in performing this miracle was to ensure that the groom and his family would not be humiliated or embarrassed, and that all the guests would have a happy wedding. In fact, Jesus Christ turned the shame of the groom and his family into honour with this miracle.
