We Christians and followers of Christ are God’s “gardeners,” and we are simply instruments in God’s work, planting and watering the seed of the Word. But the one who does the real work, causing the seed to grow and bear fruit, is God. It is God Himself who causes His Word to bear fruit and adds believers to His church. It is God alone who changes hearts, and it is because of God that people come to faith in Jesus Christ. Our work and efforts will go nowhere without God’s strength and blessing.
