The Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery to him and said, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery; and Moses in the law commanded us that such women should be stoned. But what do you say?” Jesus said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” Jesus did not fall for their trap and actually said, “She must be stoned because she has sinned. But let those who stone her be without sin.” Jesus meant that their motives and purpose in stoning the woman must be completely pure. No judge is innocent, but nevertheless, they must judge with a pure motive.
