Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Faith comes to a person when they hear the Lord Jesus Christ preached. This teaching, of course, must be based on the Word of God. But hearing only with one’s ears is not enough. A person must listen with an open heart and mind and be willing to see the truth of God. If they do so, they will find that the Word is a complete circle of truth. They will understand that the truth in itself is trustworthy and genuine. Then they will believe. This Word of God must of course be clear since hearing in this verse does not refer exclusively to what comes into our ears. Hearing actually refers to receiving the Word in its true meaning.
