What does “Lamb of God” mean? This phrase refers to the offering of a sacrifice to God. The Jews sacrificed animals to God to atone for their sins. Animals used as sin offerings. In the same way, Jesus Christ was sacrificed to “take away” the sin of the world, the sins of all who believe in him. He was the lamb that was offered on the altar, and the prophet Isaiah prophesied about him. He was the sin offering. Through his sacrifice, believers would be cleansed from their sins once and for all. John the Baptist knew that Jesus was not only the promised Messiah, but also the Lamb of God who would take away all the sins of the world.
