In what way can a wife be a suitable companion for her husband? First of all, man needed a companion for procreation—to produce offspring. Second, man needed someone to talk to and share life with. Thirdly, man needed someone to complete him, to complement him and make up for his shortcomings—filling his "missing rib".
Why did God choose man’s rib to create woman? It is because women are equal to men, taken from their side.
Adam immediately recognised that not only was the woman God created similar to him, but also she shared his very nature. Man and woman both had the same identity intellectually and spiritually.
