Atonement literally means something with which to atone for sin, and also words such as atonement and punishment are synonymous with the word atonement, and in the Bible this word is a special practice to get rid of God's wrath against sin and human punishment. It is performed and refers to the way God has provided for the forgiveness of human sins, which is usually done by sacrificing an animal and shedding its blood.
