Missing My Father

Being away from a parent can create a variety of emotions in a child, including fear, anxiety, anger, and sadness. Missing a distant parent can have a significant behavioural and psychological impact on the child. This places a greater burden on the other parent to take care of the child’s mental health. When one parent leaves, the child feels empty, lonely, rejected, and misses the distant parent. Missing a distant parent is different for each child, and age plays a role. Research shows that even infants react to the loss of a parent. Ask your child to talk about how they feel about their parent’s absence. Reassure them that it is normal to have different feelings during this time. Validate your child’s feelings and talk to them about ways to cope.
