Christians fast to humble themselves before God, to bring their bodies under control, and to receive greater guidance and power from the Holy Spirit. The prophet Isaiah said that the “fast” that is pleasing to God is humility and works of love. Without humility and works of love, fasting is just an empty show. Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. Fasting is about learning to put God at the centre of our lives. Not just in words, but in action.
